What Is Defence Cyber Certification and Why Does It Matter?

Defence Cyber Certification (DCC) is the Ministry of Defence’s scheme to boost cyber resilience across the UK defence supply chain. The MoD introduced it after 89 major cyber-attacks in a single year, showing the urgent need for stronger protection.

DCC replaces inconsistent self-assessments with a clear, independent process. It follows Defence Standard 05-138 and the Cyber Security Model. The scheme has four levels – from basic cyber hygiene at Level Zero (3 controls) to advanced security at Level Three (144 controls). All levels start with Cyber Essentials, with Levels Two and Three requiring Cyber Essentials Plus.

The scheme is currently in its early adoption phase, with the MOD gradually integrating DCC into procurement pathways. Although not universally mandated yet, it sets a clear direction for supplier assurance, and early adoption strengthens credibility and readiness for future contracting requirements. The MoD reviews certificates each year and requires full renewal every three years.

As one of the first organisations approved to certify against the DCC, Assure Technical is helping shape how defence suppliers interpret, implement, and demonstrate the requirements of this new assurance model.

Defence Cyber Certification Consultancy Support

Guided steps to achieve Defence Cyber Certification with confidence.

Preparing for Defence Cyber Certification starts with identifying the correct level for your organisation, since this depends on both the information you handle and your role in the defence supply chain.

Once the level is clear, we then carry out a structured gap analysis against the DCC standard, so you can see exactly where your controls, policies, or processes need attention.

From there, we provide a prioritised action plan that turns technical requirements into practical steps your team can follow with confidence. In addition, preparation may involve updating documentation, aligning with recognised standards such as ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials Plus, and refining day-to-day security practices.

Ultimately, with this structured approach, your organisation not only demonstrates readiness for certification but also builds resilience and credibility with both the MoD and prime contractors.

Fantastic experience from start to finish. Seamless process with friendly helpful support when needed.
