Password Management Tool Guide

In this blog, we explain what password management tools are why they are an indispensable tool for businesses. We also provide a comparison of leading password management solutions.

What is a Password Management Tool?

Whilst a Password Manager won’t completely eliminate the risk of data breaches, it can help to reduce them.

Ultimately, password managers allow organisations to protect sensitive information and reduce the overall risk of password related data breaches.

Numerous password management tools are available on the market – each is unique in it’s own way. They are systems that ultimately allow users to securely store, manage and create passwords – lessening the risk of unauthorised access.

The key benefits of Password Management Tools

1. Bolsters Security and Privacy

With a staggering 81% of data breaches being linked to weak password security, it is extremely important for a business to protect their information.

Each employee gets a private, encrypted vault to store and manage their passwords, credentials, files and private client data. Within this vault employees are able to use a password generator to create a random high strength password.

2. Mitigates Risk of Data Breaches

A password manger will prompt user to create a strong password in order to minimise the risk of unauthorised access.

3. Protects against ransomware attacks

Gain protection against ransomware attacks using robust administration, controls and visibility over strong password security and real-time dark web monitoring.

4. Enables secure sharing

IT admins can enable secure, granular and controlled sharing of credentials, secrets and vaults among employees and teams. This ensures that all the sensitive information is kept secure.

5. Enforces compliance standards

Password manager will support role-based controls, Two Factor Authentication (2FA), auditing, event reporting and industry compliance with Cyber Essentials, GDPR and more.

6. Boosts employee productivity

Many password manger are available on desktops and mobile devices, allowing for complete accessibility for the user. With the ability to access the vault on the go users are able to save time by quickly log on to any site through any device.

Password Management Tool comparison

Pete Lannon, Assure Technical’s Technical Director, recently carried out a review of the password managers available on the market. These included the market leading solutions such as LastPass, 1Password and Keeper.

His finding concluded that:

Lastpass

Lastpass gives the users the ability to access their digital vault from any device and has a strong security and encryption framework, it is one of most expensive managers currently on the market.

1Password

1Password much like other password managers will allow the user to import any existing passwords from your browser windows and allow users to share accounts with up to 5 different users. However, 1Password does not offer users a free plan, it has also been reported that the auto fill feature is also not as effective as other password managers.

Keeper

Keeper is a one of the most user friendly password managers on the market. It has a zero knowledge model to ensure that only the customer has access to their stored passwords. Keeper uses a tool called breach watch to constantly scan the dark web for users passwords and logins. This makes it one of the most secure managers on the market.

On balance, he concluded that Keeper provided the best combination of features and value for money. Pete says “Keeper makes it easy for me to manage the dozens of passwords I need to use day-to-day. All of my credentials are stored securely in a single place and I have control over what length I want a randomly generated password to be (very long!).”
